Bolton 2-0 Sheffield United | FA Cup match report
If Owen Coyle was encouraged by Bolton's performances in his first two games in charge, in both of which they were honourably defeated by Arsenal, he will now have a better idea of the problems he must overcome if he is to keep his side in the Premier League. In terms of quality, there was very little to choose between these teams; they were equally bereft. United, an honest, hard-working side who might just scrape into the Championship play-offs, had the majority of possession and were a match for their Premier League opponents in almost every respect. A win is a win, though, and Coyle will be grateful that second-half goals from Gretar Steinsson and Johan Elmander were enough to see his team into the fifth round.Coyle would have been justified in raising his voice after a desperately poor first half, but he contented himself with exhorting his team to be less one-dimensional – a plea Bolton supporters have been making for years. His players emerged with a more purposeful air and gained almost immediate reward when Kevin Davies's intelligent inside-pass put Steinsson clear inside the penalty area. Advancing almost along the by-line, the Icelander slid the ball between the legs of United goalkeeper Mark Bunn.Thereafter, unfortunately, the match resumed its previous course, although United were pressing when a late Bolton break ended with Elmander, on for the ineffective Ivan Klasnic, beating Bunn from a position similar to Steinsson's."When you come into any job, you want to hit the ground running, so it was nice to get the win," Coyle said. "The first half was quite even, but in the second half we added more facets to our play and scored two good goals. There were a lot of positives."On this evidence, however, you would not be inclined to bet the house on Coyle ending his first season in charge by leading Bolton out at Wembley.FA CupBolton WanderersSheffield Unitedguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds
