Premier League: Wolverhampton Wanderers 0-2 Wigan Athletic
This was only the fourth time these two teams had ever played each other at Molineux. Wigan will be thinking they really should do it more often after a convincing 2-0 victory in a full-blooded match that left both teams with 10 men on the pitch at the end and Roberto Martínez's men with their first win in six games.Wigan looked more incisive in attack throughout, with Charles N'Zogbia, the best player on the pitch, a roving menace from the right wing. At the other end, this was a meeting of the patently resistible force and the all-too-easily-shifted object, with a powder-puff Wolves attack against a Wigan defence who have conceded four goals seven times this season. After 19 minutes, Sylvain Ebanks-Blake had what would be Wolves' best chance of the match: put through on goal by Nenad Milijas's cute, threaded pass, he prodded weakly wide, passing up the chance to score his first goal of the season from open play.Wigan continued to press and on the half-hour,their prized Colombian, Hugo Rodallega, jinked into space outside the area and pinged a skimming right-foot drive off the inside of the left post.Things took a turn for the worse for the home side right at the end of the first half as Richard Stearman dragged back the impressive young Scotsman James McCarthy, making his Premier League debut, and Howard Webb pointed to the spot. A penalty seemed fair enough; a second yellow card for Stearman was perhaps harsh. Wolves were briefly redeemed, however, as Rodallega's low kick was palmed out by Marcus Hahnemann. After half time, Wigan continued to have the better of things and the opening goal duly arrived after 60 minutes, scored by McCarthy, who slotted the ball calmly home after Hahnemann had blocked bravely at the feet of Rodallega. The architect of the goal was the increasingly dominant N'Zogbia, whose muscular trickery on the right was proving too much for Stephen Ward, and whose initial cross had created panic. The teams were levelled up 20 minutes into the second half, when Hendry Thomas received his second bookable offence, this time for a late tackle on Ward. But N'Zogbia would not be denied. Picking the ball up from Rodallega 30 yards from goal on the left, he jinked his way across the penalty area, weaved away from Jody Craddock and finished low into the far corner.Premier LeagueWolverhampton WanderersWigan AthleticBarney Ronayguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds
