Birmingham hold nerve to end Brentford run
After experiencing the ecstasy that comes with knocking out a Premier League club on penalties in the previous round, Brentford suffered the heartache of defeat in the same manner last night when Birmingham City prevailed 4-3 in a shoot-out. The outcome was cruel on Brentford, especially as the League One club were on the cusp of reaching the quarter-finals when the evergreen Kevin Phillips broke their hearts with an equaliser in the second of four minutes of injury-time.After playing so well in the second half, Brentford were hanging on in extra-time but deserved to force penalties after a courageous display. Both teams had missed a penalty each – Lee Bowyer for Birmingham and Michael Spillane for Brentford – when Stephen Carr converted to crank up the pressure on Craig Woodman. Needing to score to take the penalty shoot-out into sudden death, the left-back drilled his kick straight at Maik Taylor and Birmingham celebrated a place in the last eight."I thought we were out of the Cup. But the resilience of the team has come to the fore again," said a relieved Alex McLeish, who admitted that the lead up to Phillips's goal was "the one bit of creativity" Birmingham showed in a listless second-half performance. "There was a lack of imagination and creativity tonight. We struggled," said the Birmingham manager. "But I must compliment my players for going right to the end."Although McLeish made seven changes from Saturday's starting line-up, the Birmingham team was still replete with experience and, as the Scot later admitted, should have been more than capable of defeating a Brentford side that sit 19th in League One.Yet Brentford, conquerors of Everton in the third round, played with spirit and endeavour and threatened to score on several occasions before Sam Wood struck a splendid left-footed volley in the 68th minute, after the impressive Myles Weston crossed for Charlie MacDonald to nod down. When the Birmingham substitute Nikola Zigic headed over moments after Richard Lee had produced a brilliant fingertip save to deny Craig Gardner it looked like it was going to be Brentford's night but Phillips, ramming home Liam Ridgewell's square pass, had other ideas. It was a crippling blow for Brentford and another was still to come when Woodman failed from the spot. "I feel very proud," said Andy Scott, the Brentford manager. "I don't think anyone could deny we deserved to win in 90 minutes."• This article was amended on 27 October 2010. The original said that Scott Dann had missed a penalty for Birmingham. This has been corrected.Carling CupBirmingham CityBrentfordStuart Jamesguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds guardian.co.uk |
