West Ham 1-2 Arsenal
Goals from Aaron Ramsay and Eduardo helped Arsenal come from behind to win at Upton ParkGood afternoon all. After the thrilling encounter served up at Old Trafford, where League One table-toppers Leeds caused an almighty upset by knocking Manchester United out of the FA Cup, our attention turns to Upton Park, where Premier League strugglers West Ham will attempt to add to the gaiety of the nation by eliminating Arsenal in one of three all Premier League third round encounters (Aston Villa beat Blackburn and Wigan saw off Hull in the others). For the hosts, Mark Noble, Danny Gabbidon, Scott Parker and Herita Ilunga are all doubtful starters, afflicted as they are with hamstring-twang. Mexican striker Guillermo Franco definitely won't play, because he's sitting this one out on the naughty step. Arsenal have lost Cesc Fabregas, Denilson and Theo Walcott to injury.I asked this in the Manchester United 0-1 Leeds United minute-by-minute report and I'll ask it again here: Have you seen this dignity-free aberration starring Jamie and Louise Redknapp yet? I can only conclude that Jamie and Louise must have lost all their millions in a Ponzi scheme, because apart from being Grinning Idiocy's Tess Daly and Vernon Kay, the looming prospect of abject penury is the only possible reason any married couple could have for publicly degrading themselves in such a fashion. Jamie Redknapp shilling holidays he wouldn't dream of going on himself by playing topless golf on a beach as his wife looks on with a lustful gleam in her eye. Has it come to this? Oh Jamie. Oh Louise.West Ham: Green, Faubert, Tomkins, Upson, Daprela, Behrami, Jimenez, Kovac, Diamanti, Stanislas, Nouble.Subs: Stech, Sears, Da Costa, Payne, Lee, Edgar, N'Gala.Arsenal: Fabianski, Sagna, Vermaelen, Gallas, Silvestre,Song Billong, Ramsey, Merida, Wilshere, Vela, Eduardo.Subs: Mannone, Diaby, Nasri, Traore, Eastmond, Emmanuel-Thomas, Gilbert.Referee: Mark Clattenburg (Tyne & Wear)Pre-match niceties: It's great to see former Arsenal and West Ham old boy John Hartson looking fit and well among the pundits in the ITV studio, considering the battle he's fought against cancer in the last 12 months. He says he's not out of the woods yet and is facing more surgery in the next month or so, but says he's feeling good all things considered. He certainly looks well. On the field, the teams line up, with Arsenal's players wearing an away strip of white shirts, black shorts and white socks. West Ham's players will play in their usual home strip.1 min: And they're off - West Ham get procceedings under way, kicking from right to left, as you look down the barrel of the TV camera.2 min: England Under 18 international Frank Nouble makes his first start for West Ham this afternoon, having made six previous appearances as a substitute. Swiss left-back Fabio Daprela is also making his first appearance for the Hammers, deputising for the injured Herita Ilunga.3 min: The teenager Duprela makes his first contribution of note, upending fellow whelp Jack Wilshere out by the touchline. It's a free-kick for Arsenal, but nothing comes of it.5 min: West Ham have lined up in a 4-4-1-1 formation, with Luis Jiminez tucked in between the midfield four and lone frontman Nouble. Arsenal are playing a 4-3-3, with Jack Wilshere and Eduardo playing to the right and left of Carlos Vela up front.6 min: West Ham win the first corner of the match as the ball is deflected wide by Thomas Vermaelen. The ensuing inswinger is only half-cleared and Junior Stanislav has a crack from the edge of the penalty area. His shot ricochets off a defender and sails out to safety.7 min: Arsenal win a corner, but it's wasted when the ball is only curled as far as the near post, where Nouble hacks clear.8 min: Diamante picks up the ball on the right wing, cuts inside and tries a shot from distance. He slices it horribly and his effort is so awful that the ball goes out for an Arsenal throw-in on the other side of the pitch.10 min: It's been a lively enough start and West Ham have had the better of it without creating anything decent in the way of goalscoring opportunities.Regarding that Jamie and Louise advert: "Not only has it come this but it's going to get much, much worse," writes Stephen Peake. "This year there will be a major marketing event: a general election. Prepare for a small army of hideous marketing constructs with too many teeth radiating artificial sincerity at us. It won't be safe to switch on a TV but, if you must, remember the words of Christopher Lee: 'Don't look at the eyes!'."13 min: A lot of dour and attritional faffing around in midfield by players from both teams.14 min: Arsenal win a corner, prompting several defenders to lumber up from the back.15 min: Arsenal win another corner. If they weren't already there, it would probably prompt several defenders to lumber up from the back. Fran Merida sends the ball into the mixer and Matthew Upson hacks clear at the near post. This is fairly grim stuff compared to the match between Man Utd and Leeds.17 min: Sloppy play from West Ham centre-half James Tomkins, who gifts possession to Eduardo a few yards outside the West Ham penalty area. The Croat/Brazilian shoots and his 25-yard daisy-cutter brings a smart save out of Robert Green, who concedes a corner.19 min: From the ensuing corner, Fran Merida fails to clear the first defender for the third time in 20 minutes. That's shocking.20 min: Alessandro Diamanti appeals for a penalty after his attempted cross strikes the hand of Thomas Vermaelen. None is forthcoming.21 min: "Totally agree about that ad," writes Carolyn Bullock. "It's wiped the Leeds result-induced smile off my face and I wish you hadn't suggested I watch it. You would have to be mad to believe that they actually browse Thomas Cook brochures to decide which package holiday to take. Shame on them." Indeed ... and shame on Alan Hansen and the little dude from Top Gear, who I'm prepared to wager don't shop at Morrison's either. That said, Kerry Katona is probably working on the till at Iceland by this stage.23 min: West Ham win a free-kick about 30 yards from goal, right of centre after an enterprising run from Fabio Daprela is brought to an abrupt end. Junior Stanislas tries his luck, but curls the ball high and wide of the left upright.25 min: Alex Song gets a yellow card for a frustrated lunge on Valon Behrami.26 min: Good save from Lukasz Fabianski in the Arsenal goal, who dives to his right to claw a curled effort from Diamanti around the post and out for a corner from which nothing comes.28 min: Another corner for Arsenal, which Merida sends in from the left. This effort is deeper, but Radoslav Kovac heads clear from the edge of the six-yard box. The ball is returned with interest, prompting Rob Green to rush off his line and punch up the field.30 min: This is turning into a fairly turgid, dour and boring encounter. A goal, particularly for West Ham, would liven up proceedings no end.32 min: "There was a delicious thread on the match report page for the Man U-Leeds game which now seems to have disappeared," writes Jim Harris. "It took about four comments for a Man U fan to come on to tell us that the FA cup doesn't matter to 'the big clubs'. Are Guardian Towers committed to denying us our moment of schadenfreude? Any chance of it being reinstated?" I'm unaware of the thread you're referring to, Jim, but I imagine it was set up in error as our match reports don't usually have comment threads underneath them. I'm sure there'll be a comment piece along on the sportblog soon, underneath which you and other Leeds fans will be able to engage in all manner of gloating.35 min: Julien Faubert gets penalised for shouldering Fran Merida off the ball in the Arsenal left-back position. The fact that that's one of the more noteworthy incidents to have taken place in the past few minutes should tell you all you need to know about this game.37 min: Sloppy play from Jack Wilshere, who gives the ball away on the edge of his own penalty area, enabling Junior Stanislav to tee up Behrami, whose low drive whistles wide of the left upright.39 min: For Arsenal, Carlos Vela tries his luck with a low diagonal effort from a narrow-ish angle about 12 yards out. Rob Green saves comfortably at the near post.40 min: Five minutes to half-time, then a break, then another 45 minutes of ... this. If only there was a former footballer and his former popstar wife out there who could steer me in the direction of a firm that provides a service for people like me who are sick of the daily grind and would like to go and live someplace else for a week or two. Ideally a warm place beside the sea, with a nice beach where I could risk incurring the wrath of the local health and safety inspector by hitting golf balls around a public beach while not wearing a shirt.44 min: Referee Mark Clattenburg waves his yellow card in the general vicinity of West Ham full-back Fabio Daprela for clattering into the back of Arsenal's Jack Wilshere.GOAL! West Ham 1-0 Arsenal (Diamanti 45+1) West Ham take the lead in first-half injury time. Alessandro Diamanti beats the Arsenal offside trap to latch on to a through ball from Valon Behrami and prod the ball past the onrushing Lukasz Fabianski and into the bottom right-hand corner. His finish wasn't as clinical as it might have been - the ball hit Fabianski on its way in, but managed to trundle over the line nevertheless.Half-timeHalf-time analysis: Andy Townsend thinks West Ham should have got a penalty for the handball I mentioned in the 20th minute, but John Hartson does not agree. Meanwhile in my email inbox, there's this missive from Max Simpson: "The Redknapp's might not look like a couple you'd expect to see on a Thomas Cook holiday," he writes. "But they certainly sound like one."Second half: There are no changes on either side at the start of the second half, which is unsurprising as far as West Ham is concerned. Their bench looks like a creche, such is the youthfulness of the substitutes sitting on it.46 min: Frank Nouble latches on to a throughball and shanks it harmlessly wide from about 20 yards. ITV co-commentator Jim Beglin remarks that the West Ham striker is "awkward at getting into position and can't quite sort his feet out". In other words, he's Carlton Cole in disguise.47 min: Nouble shoots when he should have passed to Stanislas and another chance goes begging for West Ham.48 min: It's all West Ham in the early stages of the second half - they're running amok. This time Junior Stanislas pulls the trigger from just outside the Arsenal penalty area and brings an excellent fingertip save out of Fabianski. It's a corner for West Ham, which Arsenal clear.50 min: Arsenal attack down the left flank and Carlos Vela sends a cross curling out from the far post. It's too high for Eduardo.52 min: Diamanti goes down injured and has to go off for treatment, reducing his side to 10 men for the time being.53 min: Diamanti returns to the fray, hobbling gingerly after turning on his left ankle.54 min: Arsenal try to "Arsenal" the ball through the centre with a series of neat passes but come unstuck in the heavily congested area on the edge of the West Ham penalty area and are crowded off the ball by sheer weight of numbers.57 min: West Ham go close on the counter-attack when Diamante picks out Julien Faubert and sends the Frenchman galloping up the right flank. His cross for Frank Nouble is wayward, but the rangy striker manages to keep the ball in play and pass it to Stanislav, who gives it away.59 min: West Ham centre-half James Tomkins almost gets caught in possession by Wilshere, but manages to spare his own blushes with a lunging last-ditch attempt to prevent the Arsenal player from getting away from him.60 min: Diamanti, the classiest act on the pitch thus far, dinks a high ball over the top of Arsenal's defence for Nouble to chase. The ball breaks to Behrami, who wins a free-kick on the left flank between penalty area and touchline. Nothing comes from it.63 min: The second half is a lot more entertaining than the first was and West Ham look more likely goalscorers than Arsenal at the moment.Arsenal double substitution: Fran Merida and Jack Wilshere off, Abou Diaby and Samir Nasri on.67 min: "Cracking performance from West Ham in the second half, they look inspired," writes Chris Langmead. "Mind you, Arsenal are doing very well considering they are down to nine men, Merida and Eduardo having decided not to show up today." Make that 10 men, Chris - Merida's been replaced since you sent your email.33 min: Fabio Daprela concedes a corner as he diverts an attempted cross by Bakari Sagna out for a corner with an excellent challenge. Nothing comes of the ensuing inswinger and the home side clear.69 min: Robert Green goes down injured after pulling off an excellent double save from Abou Diaby and Alexandre Song. One of his own players landed on him and he appears to be getting treatment for a shoulder injury, but shows no ill-effects about 15 seconds later when coming out to claim a corner.73 min: The referee gives Alessandro Diamanti and and Carlos Vela a ticking-off for getting involved in a bit of argy-bargy after the latter had been fouled by the former.74 min: Arsenal continue trying to find a route through the centre, but West Ham are back defending in droves. If you can't go through something, you need to try going over or around it, so Bakari Sagna tries to do a mixture of both by sending in a cross from the right touchline. Samir Nasri takes a swing at it, but his effort is high and wide.GOAL! West Ham 1-1 Arsenal (Ramsay 78) A mesmerising series of intricate passing and off the ball running around the edge of the West Ham penalty area culminates in Aaron Ramsay picking up a short pass from Carlos Vela and slotting a left-footed shot past Robert Green and inside the far post. That's a beautiful goal.80 min: Abou Diaby goes down in a heap after taking six in the chest from Luis Jiminez. Six studs, I hasten to add, not bullets. It was a late, high challenge for which Jiminez immediately apologises. His apology is not accepted by a highly indignant Diaby.GOAL! West Ham 1-2 Arsenal (Eduardo 82) That's a marvellous header from Eduardo, who beats Matthew Upson in the air to get on the end of a Carlos Vela cross from the left touchline and plant the ball in the top corner from about 12 yards out.84 min: Corner for Arsenal. The ball's sent into the mixer and breaks kindly for Alexandre Song, who sends a shot high over the bar from about 15 yards.86 min: Another corner for Arsenal and Eduardo goes close with his head again. He rises unmarked to meet the ball with his forehead and send it fizzing inches over the crossbar.88 min: Arsenal are really putting the hurt on West Ham, tormenting them with shot after shot after shot on goal. This time Vela goes close, beating Robert Green only to see his shot cleared off the line by Fabvio Daprela.89 min: "Eduardo showed up after all," writes Peter Richards. There'll be five minutes of added time.90+1 min: West Ham win a free-kick just inside their own half for a foul on Diamanti. Robert Green wellies it forward, it's intercepted and West Ham get caught short at the back. Carlos Vela picks out Aaron Ramsay with a pass and the young midfielder's shot on goal is blocked by Green.90+3 min: Arsenal win a free-kick about 35 yards out from the West Ham goal. Vermaelen and Nasri both stand over the ball, before the Belgian strikes. His shot hits the wall and is deflected out of harm's way.90+5 min: It's all over - Mark Clattenburg blows the final whistle and Arsenal go into the fourth round draw, which takes place shortly. West Ham were good today, but not quite good enough. All that's left for them to focus on this season is a long and possibly unsuccessful battle against relegation.FA CupWest Ham UnitedArsenalMinute-by-minute reportBarry Glendenningguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds guardian.co.uk |

However we'd like your input as much as possible – please send us your favourite links to stories/clips on YouTube etc and we'll flag up the best above the line.9.51am: Great Britain reached the final of the Hopman Cup for the first time as Andy Murray and Laura Robson defeated Russia 2-1 in Perth. The number three seeds maintained their perfect record in the competition and will now play Spanish pairing Tommy Robredo and MarÃa José MartÃnez Sánchez in tomorrow's title decider. Does Andy Murray, Laura Robson and also Heather Watson's success reflect an improvement in the development of young British tennis players or are they exceptions who have floated to the top in a pool of mediocrity? GR10.16am: Today's Rumour Mill is here, starring a certain Belgian sleuth. Players on the move, possibly, include Younes Kaboul, Kevin Kuranyi and a return to Arsenal for Sol Campbell. Yes, we aren't entirely convinced by that final one either. JW10.25am: OK, morning meeting update:• We'll have all the latest team news and previews for what remains of the weekend's football action. And we will keep you updated with the latest fixture postponements around Britain.• The latest news from Portsmouth, regarding the 'complete mismanagement across the board' at Fratton Park.• If it beats the weather, second place hosts third as Nottingham Forest visit West Brom in the Championship at 7.45pm tonight. You can follow live updates with our match centre.• We're due an England press conference from South Africa in the wake of their latest Test great escape. And what about the Proteas? Do questions need to be asked of them after their second failure to close out a Test in three games?• We've already mentioned the tennis, but also of note is the upcoming Brisbane international final, which will pit Justine Henin against Kim Clijsters.• There will be more Mayweather-Pacquaio.• And on the sportblog: Rob Smyth is back with the Joy of Six: great solo goals, while Amy Lawrence will be on hand with a look forward to the Africa Cup of Nations. We'll also have a gallery of the major players to keep an eye on in Angola. JD10.40am: The Mayweather-Pacquiao non-fight debate is rumbling on. Mayweather has now described himself as "thoroughly disgusted" with the situation, adding: "First and foremost, not only do I want to fight Manny Pacquiao, I want to whip his punk ass". And make millions of dollars into the bargain presumably. JW11.06am: Roberto Mancini has taken the final step towards becoming a part of the English football landscape by starring in this week's edition of You are the Ref. JW11.16am: Football in North America is set for continued growth after a deal was reached to introduce a second tier professional league to complement the MLS."We are extremely pleased that we were able to come to a solution that ensures we will have Division 2 professional soccer in the United States in 2010," said the US Soccer president Sunil Gulati. "This agreement allows us to continue to develop the professional game in many important markets around the country, while at the same time working towards the long-term stability of Division 2 professional soccer."The second tier will consist of two conferences including teams from Austin, Minnesota, Portland, Puerto Rico, Rochester, Tampa Bay, Baltimore, Carolina, Miami, Montreal, St. Louis and Vancouver. Will growth in the United States damage domestic football in Mexico or is this advert featuring Landon Donovan dressed in a sombrero replete with comedy mustache more harmful? GR11.43am: Goals, goals, goals, six to be exact. That's right, it's today's Joy of Six solo goals. Maradona, tick. Best, tick. Baggio, tick. Le Tissier, nowhere to be seen. Remember, it is not a definitive list etc etc. JW11.51am: The first of the weekend's Premier League games to fall foul of the snow is Fulham v Portsmouth, with Liverpool asking for their match with Tottenham to also get the chop. All the latest matches to be called off can be found here, it is going to be a quiet weekend.12.04pm: Racing has also been hit hard by the recent arctic weather but Lingfield is on. You can keep up to date with the latest news and tips in today's Talking Horses blog. GR12.12pm: Napoli have finally relieved Liverpool of the Italian left back Andrea Dossena. He has signed a four-year deal with the Serie A side. Rafael BenÃtez signed Dossena from Udinese two years ago for around £7m and after looking overweight and heavy of touch it was soon apparent he'd made a bad decision. "I'm happy to be able to wear the Napoli shirt," Dossena told Napoli's official website. "I chose a prestigious club that has an important plan." GR12.40pm: Burnley v Stoke is the latest top-fllght match to be postponed this weekend due to the cold weather conditions. A statement on the Clarets' official website reads: "Burnley Football Club regrets to inform supporters that Saturday's Barclays Premier League game against Stoke City has been postponed for safety reasons." GR12.53pm: The former Preston manager Alan Irvine is set to be appointed as Sheffield Wednesday's new manager. Irvine guided Preston from the relegation zone to safety in his first season before taking them to the play-offs in his second. With Wednesday second from bottom in the Championship Owls fans will be hoping he can do something similar at Hillsborough. GR1.13pm: Another one bites the dust, Sunderland v Bolton is off, giving Owen Coyle a bit more time to get his feet under the desk before starting his work in earnest. JW1.30pm: This story about Arsène Wenger having "money to burn" this January has prompted talk in the Guardian office of the time when The KLF put £1m on the fire (watch from 2mins 49secs) in the early 90s. A wonderful artistic statement or a huge waste of cash? The same could be asked of this I suppose. JW1.50pm: Ronnie O'Sullivan has taken inspiration from Usain Bolt as he enters the new decade with a new approach to his snooker. Ahead of the UK Masters O'Sullivan said: "Usain Bolt has proved you don't have to be so intense about everything you do. You can make things fun and still break world records and be the best at what you do in the world. I think I've performed my best when I've had that attitude." Is O'Sullivan still snooker's best player? Or would a little modesty do him no harm? GR2.22pm: "The Africa Cup of Nations has for decades kept local football fans absorbed, but never before has it assumed such significance. This edition, the prelude to the first World Cup to be hosted on the continent, pulls the curtain on the most important year in the history of African football." This is the opinion of Amy Lawrence. Who do you think will win the Africa Cup of Nations? Ivory Coast are 9-4 favourites followed by Ghan at 9-2 and then Cameroon at 11-2. Get over to the Sportblog to read Amy's blog and have your say. GR2.42pm: Coming up we'll have live updates from Patrick Vieira's press conference as he is presented as a Manchester City player at Eastlands. That's due to get underway at 3pm, but in the meantime if you could think of the perfect candidate to fill the vacancy of Cheerleading Manager at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers feel free to post your suggestions below. Here are some of the job spec requests:• Coordinate and produce annual swimsuit calendar; including shoot location, staffing, swimsuit selection, shoot scheduling and production• Oversee selection and purchase of all uniform and apparel needs• An outgoing personality and a professional demeanor• The ability to work long and flexible hours including evenings and weekends and occasional national and international travelRon Atkinson's not doing much these days is he? GR3.00pm: Over to Eastlands now for Patrick Vieira's return to the Premier League after a four-and-a-half-year hiatus. Rumour has it that he is going to be paid over £100,000 a week at City - not bad for a 33-year-old defensive midfielder with dodgy knees. Didi Hamann must be kicking himself that he never got a similar deal. GR3.04pm: Empty chairs the nervous coughing of hacks and rustling paper in Manchester. Yup, we're still waiting ...3.12pm: Well, we might have jumped the gun with this one. Either that or Garry Cook, Manchester City's chief executive, is frantically making finishing touches to his list titled 'Things Patrick Vieira Can't Say'.3.17pm: Ho hum. Maybe Patrick's perusing the Manchester City club shop for a mug, alarm clock or calendar to put in his flat. I've got a mate who's moving out of his two-up-two-down in Levenshulme next month. Could be ideal. Yes, we're still waiting ...3.27pm: Vieira's here and he's flanked by the Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini. Born in Senegal, standing 6ft 3 1/2in tall Vieira began his career at Cannes in the south of France where he made his debut at the age of 17 (Wikipedia's great isn't it?). Let's see what he has to say ...3.31pm: "I'm delighted to be back in the Premiership. City is a really ambitious club."3.31pm: He admits he's "not 20' but "not 45" either and believes he still has lots to offer. "I know that I can give something to the club and hopefully we can be successful this year."3.32pm: With a glint in his eye he admits that getting back into the French national team is a chief motivating factor. On Roberto Mancini: "He will bring the club the discipline of the game. That every single player will give everything for the club. He will be a benefit for the club."3.33pm: "I strongly believe we are not out of the race for the title." On playing against Arsenal: " I will play the same." Enlightening stuff.3.34pm: Roberto Mancini is carrying a casual look today. Mourinho-esque even. He has this to say: "Patrick wins a lot of trophies at Arsenal and Inter. He will be a regular player and improve our performances." So perhaps he will feature more often than many think.3.35pm: Mancini says the spending is not over at City yet and other big names will join him. Vieira might not face Blackburn on Monday however as he is carrying a kick on the calf.3.36pm: On having a player who he knows in his team Mancini says: "His mentality is most important for the team. He scores goals with his head. He can improve our performance in the future and in our next games."3.38pm: Mancini stresses the importance of finishing in the top four and believes Vieira is somebody who can help the club achieve this.3.39pm: Vieira on rivals Manchester United: "It is a special game but I won't think about it. It's important to go out and win any game. I am lucky to choose the right team that I hope will be successful. Hopefully this [success] can happen."3.41pm: On competition for places in City's midfield: "I will show to the manager that I can play and show in every training session that I can play. There are a lot of big names here."3.41pm: Vieira admits to missing the Premier League and seems grateful to be back at a top club at the age of 33.3.42pm: That's it for the press conference. It wasn't all that revealing but not bad for a freezing Friday afternoon. So will Vieira be a key player? Or is he just there to help Mancini get a hold of the dressing room? You can have your say below. Cheers. GR4.39pm: Keep up to speed with all the latest football fixtures to be postponed right here. Liverpool v Spurs is the most recenr casualty which presents Sky Sports with a blank at 4pm on Sunday. For the Fiver's take on SNOW CHAOS! click here. GR5.05pm: OK, time on the blog. Thanks for all your posts. We'll be back on Monday, but, in the meantime, here's our (current) live plans for the weekend. Tomorrow: Hull v Chelsea MBM (12.30pm), football clockwatch (2pm), Birmingham v Manchester United MBM (5.15pm). And for Sunday: West Ham v Wolves MBM (1.15pm) and Angola v Mali (6.30pm) in the Africa Cup of Nations opener. Have a great weekend.
