Wigan 1-1 Bolton | Premier League match report
Although Heinz are based in Wigan, this is not a match that did what it said on the tin. Given that five of the past six encounters between these sides have produced a single goal, this has been one of the more masochistic of the Lancashire derbiesHowever, Roberto MartÃnez and Owen Coyle are managers who believe that a football is meant to be passed and the two sides produced a surprisingly entertaining game marred by the sight of the Wigan midfielder James McCarthy being carried off on a stretcher with a suspected knee ligament injury following a tackle with Fabrice Muamba.Just as at Newcastle last Saturday, this was a draw that Wigan should have converted into a victory. It would be churlish to criticise Hugo Rodallega, whose muscular athleticism drove the home side forward but when he went up to meet a corner with 10 minutes left, the stadium went up as one to greet the goal, although the ball went the other side of the post and the Colombian striker lay flat on his back, hands running through his braided hair. Some 20 minutes earlier, Rodallega had broken through. He had finished off a lovely move, although Coyle and the rest of the Bolton bench were convinced that when Charles N'Zogbia had slipped through Franco di Santo, who in turn put Rodallega through, he was offside. It was not a lead that lasted. Much as Coyle is trying to reduce the amount of football Bolton play in the air, they are still dangerous when Kevin Davies is given a ball to head. Wigan made a hash of clearing Stuart Holden's corner, the ball went vertically and Davies nodded the ball down for Johan Elmander to sweep home. It was his fifth goal of the campaign - as many as the Swede had managed for Bolton in the whole of last season.Premier LeagueWigan AthleticBolton WanderersTim Richguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds guardian.co.uk |
