Wigan 2-0 Wolves
Reputations can go before a player but Karl Henry took his out of the equation with a horrific challenge on Jordi Gómez. Three weeks ago it was a sturdy but ultimately fair challenge from Henry which left the England striker Bobby Zamora with a broken leg, ligament damage and the prospect of a four-month lay-off.In contrast, this one left the referee Lee Mason with no choice. Comfortably beaten to the ball by Gómez, Henry refused to abort his lunge and sent the Spaniard spiralling into orbit after connecting with his opponent's right ankle. As Henry trudged off for his 11th-minute lunge, the Wigan Athletic manager, Roberto Martínez, suspected Gómez's match – if not year – had ended prematurely. "I feared the worst when I saw it because it wasn't just the first contact," Martínez said. "If you see the replay, Karl catches Jordi with his knee with real force – I thought it was a broken leg and he was a fortunate man to get up. I can't remember a worse tackle than that at the DW Stadium. It was a nasty moment."But get up Gómez did, and to devastating effect, as his 65th-minute free-kick arced over the wall and in off the underside of the crossbar to end Wolves' defiance. Until that point Wolverhampton Wanderers threatened to repeat Sunderland's feat of defiance with 10 men on the same turf last month. That was only Wigan's third goal in seven league matches but a fourth followed to crown their 100th top-flight home contest. It came during Wolves' most vulnerable period – this was the fourth match in succession they had conceded in the final five minutes – when Hugo Rodallega's boot fortuitously diverted the ball in.For the Wolves manager, Mick McCarthy, the inquest into a fourth defeat in a row, which equals their worst Premier League sequence, will include a consideration to fine Henry for his actions.
