Man Utd 2-2 West Brom
The plan was for Wayne Rooney to watch from the bench as Manchester United demonstrated that, ultimately, they could do without their most gifted footballer but these days Sir Alex Ferguson's plans do not run to the timetables he sets.At half-time the game looked done. United, who had yet to drop a point at Old Trafford, were two goals up with Rooney dropped to the bench after his protestation that there was nothing wrong with his ankle that reportedly prevented him playing at Sunderland or Valencia. He had been forced to watch as first Javier Hernández, his direct replacement, converted Nani's spilled free-kick and then Nani himself seized on a slip from Nicky Shorey and drove home in front of the Stretford End after a lovely one-two with Dimitar Berbatov.Ten minutes after the interval, the whole of Old Trafford was howling Rooney's name. Manchester United have been repeatedly betrayed by their defence this season but never by their goalkeeper. It is hard to remember Edwin van der Sar ever committing a serious error and certainly nothing like the mistake in which he dropped a straightforward cross at Somen Tchoyi's feet, allowing West Brom to drag back a match that had looked hopelessly lost.Five minutes earlier, a low scudding free-kick went through a forest of feet, and found Nemanja Vidic and Jonas Olsson on the line. The Swede reacted quicker than the Serb, who had directed a header against the post that would surely have killed the game, and West Brom began to sense an upset, although United's Patrice Evra was adjudged to have had the final touch. With 18 minutes remaining Rooney was introduced, although his first two touches did not justify the standing ovation he was granted by Old Trafford. Having beaten Arsenal at the Emirates and pushed Liverpool to the limit at Anfield, Roberto Di Matteo's side are not one that play with fear. Had Chris Brunt not screwed a shot wide from two yards, West Brom would have begun the fightback before half-time. Manchester United dropping point after point away from home is one thing. United squandering points at Old Trafford is a story bigger than the egos of Ferguson and Rooney.Premier LeagueManchester UnitedWest BromTim Richguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds guardian.co.uk |
