Wenger: Campbell retains top flight class
• Manager felt defender 'did very well under the circumstances'• 'His attitude and application were outstanding,' says PulisThe only bright spot in Arsenal's FA Cup defeat by Stoke City yesterday was the comeback of Sol Campbell, according to the manager Arsène Wenger. The 35-year-old defender was making his first appearance for the Gunners since the 2006 Champions League final in Paris against Barcelona.Campbell came in for some criticism for for Ricardo Fuller's two headed goals in Stoke's 3-1 victory but Wenger said: "Sol had a good game. Considering he has not played for five months, I felt he did very well under the circumstances. He has a future in the Premier League. He has motivation now and has been training very well. His reward was to be back in the side. He may have suffered from fatigue in the final 20 minutes, but that is hardly surprising considering how long he has been away from the top level."Stoke's manager, Tony Pulis, also praised Campbell. "I felt his attitude and application were outstanding," he said. "He is a very good player and considering how long he has been out of the Premier League, he was excellent. He will be a very good addition to what is already an outstanding Arsenal squad."Wenger made nine changes from the side that beat Bolton Wanderers 4-2 last week, and said that only William Gallas had been rested.Arsenal had minor injury problems with Bacary Sagna, Thomas Vermaelen and Gaël Clichy. He said: "All of those players will be back for the trip to Aston Villa on Wednesday, the first of four crunch matches for the Gunners against their major rivals."Arsenal are then at home to Manchester United on Sunday and have games with Chelsea and Liverpool soon afterwards.Wenger said: "If those lads had haveplayed at Stoke, they probably would not have been able to play at Villa. We have 10 injuries, and I did not have much room to manoeuvre over team selection. There was not much else I could have done. We might have got away with it [that selection] at home, but away at a place like Stoke it was more difficult. They were physically stronger than us and some of the younger players found it hard to cope."Sol CampbellArsène WengerArsenalStoke CityFA Cupguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds
